What is Trauma?

Trauma is the emotional, psychological, and physical response to experiences that overwhelm a person’s ability to cope. This can include events such as abuse, neglect, loss, violence, accidents, medical trauma, chronic stress, or relational wounds. Trauma does not only live in memories. It can also affect the nervous system, the body, emotions, relationships, and a person’s sense of safety in the world. Many people experience symptoms such as anxiety, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, panic, difficulty trusting others, intrusive thoughts, chronic stress, sleep disturbances, or feeling “stuck” in survival mode.

how we can help

Trauma treatment with Back in Balance is approached through a compassionate, evidence-based lens that helps individuals feel safe, supported, and empowered in their healing process. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and gentle nervous system regulation techniques, therapy focuses on understanding how trauma impacts thoughts, emotions, the body, and relationships. Clients learn practical coping skills, grounding tools, and healthier patterns while building self-awareness, emotional resilience, and a greater sense of balance and safety within themselves.

  • Using evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I help clients understand how past experiences may influence current thoughts, emotional responses, behaviors, and relationship patterns. Together, we work to identify unhelpful thought cycles, build healthier coping strategies, and develop practical tools for managing anxiety, triggers, self-criticism, shame, and emotional overwhelm. My approach is collaborative, supportive, and focused on creating lasting emotional resilience and empowerment.

  • Trauma can leave the nervous system feeling stuck in survival mode, making it difficult to feel present, calm, or emotionally grounded. Through mindfulness-based practices, I help clients reconnect with the present moment in a safe and supportive way. Techniques such as grounding exercises, breathwork, guided awareness, and nervous system regulation tools help reduce stress responses, increase emotional awareness, and create a greater sense of balance, calm, and connection within the body.

  • Compassionate care is at the heart of my approach to trauma treatment. I provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard, respected, and supported throughout their healing process. Trauma responses are understood as protective survival patterns, not personal failures. Therapy focuses on building trust, emotional safety, self-compassion, and empowerment while honoring each client’s unique experiences and pace of healing.

  • Trauma is not only held in thoughts and emotions, but often within the nervous system and body itself. I incorporate gentle somatic approaches to help clients reconnect with their bodies and safely release stored stress, tension, and dysregulation. Through grounding techniques, body awareness, breathwork, movement, and relaxation practices, clients learn how to support nervous system healing without feeling overwhelmed or retraumatized. The focus is on restoring safety, balance, and connection between the mind and body.
